CANSO – Racist graffiti found on a Canso bus shelter last week prompted an RCMP investigation and a note home to all students of Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy.

After learning of the incident on June 8, the school administration and the Municipality of the District of Guysborough immediately reported it to the RCMP, which is investigating.

“This type of racial and culturally insensitive incident affects our entire school community,” said the letter home to parents and guardians from Principal Jeff George. “To say the least, it is a very serious matter and one that will not be tolerated.”

School administrators visited all classes to speak with students the same day, “in an age-appropriate manner, about the seriousness and consequences of this very hurtful and disrespectful act,” said the letter. “We also reminded students that vandalism is criminal activity that could result in charges by the RCMP as well as disciplinary consequences in accordance with the Provincial School Code of Conduct Policy.”

The letter asked for anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the local detachment of the RCMP.
