Special unveilings planned

Donors, communities to be celebrated at CLC grand opening

GUYSBOROUGH – Every part of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough will be made to feel welcome and given a sense of ownership over the new Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex — and that’s not just because of the warm welcome from staff and comfortable surroundings. At the grand opening of the new facility on June 29 and 30, a wall saluting each individual community in the district will be unveiled.

That’s one of three unveilings planned for the opening events. The others are a donor recognition installation and the outdoor sign for the new Steve Smith Soccer Field and Walking Track. These designs are all under wraps — literally — until the opening celebrations.

After a ribbon cutting and the unveiling of the soccer and track sign starting at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 29, tours of the complex will be offered. Activities later that afternoon and evening include a youth shinny hockey tournament, family event, adult shinny hockey game and outdoor entertainment around the fire pit.

On Saturday, June 30, festivities get underway with a youth fun run and the continuation of the youth shinny hockey tournament. At 11 a.m., a co-ed soccer game gets underway, followed by a family pool party at 1 p.m. That evening, the band Jug-in-Hand will play for an adult dance.

Free access to the fitness centre is offered from 3-9 p.m. on June 29 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 30.

The complex is the new home for continuing MODG Recreation and community programs, as well as new programming. For example, this summer the field will host the community’s growing minor soccer program and Mulgrave Road Theatre’s ROADies program will be held inside the facility. New recreation dept. initiatives include this summer’s “Walk with your Doc” program on the walking track.

“It allows for us to grow,” MODG Recreation Director Angie Tavares says of the CLC. “It allows for us to give the community what they deserve. It gives us the opportunity to help the community become a better place to live and to grow.”

Tavares says the Lifestyle Complex will allow MODG “to host bigger events and increase the traffic flow into our community.”

The full grand opening schedule is found in the special Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex insert in this week’s paper.
