Maria MacDonald wins prestigious Wessex Scholarship

The Wessex Scholarship is presented annually to commemorate the visit by His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex to the IWK Health Centre in November 2015. A $5,000 award, this scholarship recognizes the important role community service has played in supporting the IWK in providing exceptional care. The Wessex Scholarship is awarded to a deserving individual each June by the IWK Board of Directors and the IWK Foundation Board of Trustees.

The recipient this year is Maria MacDonald.

MacDonald will soon be graduating from Guysborough Academy and has been accepted into the Nursing Program at St. F.X. University. She has been involved with her school and her community with many health-related initiatives including Green Team, Jack.org., Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.), Gender Sexuality Alliance, the Youth Health Centre Community committee, and as a facilitator for the Healthy Relationships for Youth Program.

MacDonald is also the only youth member of the Guysborough County Community Health Board. By volunteering her time at her community’s nursing home, MacDonald was convinced that she wanted to be a nurse.

In MacDonald’s own words she says, “health is not merely the absence of illness, but encompasses one’s physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being.”
