GUYSBOROUGH – It's only been a few short weeks since construction started on an apartment building behind the Gas Bar and Robin's Donut shop in Guysborough on Route 16, but citizens are excited about soon having more housing options in the area.
Scott Cook, owner of Chedabucto Investments Ltd. says the apartment complex has been a project on his drawing board for many years. Ten years ago he first thought of building apartments in the village of Guysborough but things didn't come together at that time. Five years later it was back on his to do list, but health problems sidelined his plans.
In the spring of 2017 Cook circulated flyers in the Guysborough area to guage the community's perceived need for an apartment complex and got overwhelmingly positive feedback. He wasn't surprised that the flyer was well received; for years people had been asking him, a well-known local businessman, about the possibility of building apartments in the area.
“A lot of people have told me that they wouldn't want to move out of the area if there was something good in the area. I guess that is why we decided to build it – a lot of people were asking for it,” says Cook.
In late September or early October of this year, the two-storey, 10-unit building will be ready for occupancy. The building has four, 2-bedroom apartments, five, 1-bedroom, one bachelor suite and a lounge area available to all residents. There will be an elevator, patios and balconies respectively for first and second floor apartments.
“I think it is a really good location because services are all there within walking distance. We are having a good response – it is filling up,” says Cook.
Along with the apartment building, a second building will begin construction in late July or early August. This building, on the same level as the existing gas bar, will be the new home to the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission (NSLC) currently located across the road from Guysborough Memorial Hospital. The new NSLC will open in the fall.
Along with Cook, local contractor Danny Procure is working on the site. “It's making for busy summer,” says Cook.
