SUNNYVILLE – Winning gold at a National Basketball Championship isn't something you get used to but each time Tyrese Borden of Sunnyville plays on the Nova Scotia Boys Basketball team at nationals, he's come home with a championship ring.
Last weekend the 15U / 17U Boy's National Championship was held in Kamloops, B.C. And once again Borden was on the team.
Borden, who is heading into his Grade 12 year at Guysborough Academy, has been picked for the provincial basketball team each year for the past three years. As a member of the 15U team in 2016, he helped the team win gold at nationals. The following year he played a successful season on the 16U team, which doesn't play in a national championship, traveling to games across the country throughout the summer. All that time on the court led to this most recent success with the 17U team.
In 2016, Borden told The Journal that scouts were at the championship games, but that they were mostly looking at the players on the 17U teams. This year, at the top of the age category, Borden will surely catch the eye of those same scouts.
