GUYSBOROUGH – At Wednesday’s monthly meeting of the District of Guysborough council, the Eastern Strait Regional Enterprise Network's (ESREN) Economic Development Officer Maria Ludlow spoke about the agency's newly created Regional Tourism Group.
The presentation included updating council on tourism workshops currently being held across the region. Two workshops recently held in Larry’s River and St. Mary’s, respectively, had strong participation, and another workshop is planned for Guysborough.
A tourism committee made up of local business owners, a representative from La Société des Acadiens de la Région de Tor Baie, the Canso Development Association, and MODG councillors is seeking additional tourism-based businesses to join them.
In the presentation, Ludlow also informed council that ESREN has formed a broadband committee and has met with Eastlink to help address demands for better broadband access in rural areas. Looking ahead, the committee will also receive a presentation from Bell and include the company's data, as well as data sourced from the local community, in a report to outline the path forward to bring better internet access to rural homes and businesses.
Ludlow also said ESREN is planning courses to support small businesses in the area, including those in the fishery.
In other council news, councillors learned that the Canso and Area Arena is having a record year in hockey registration.
