CANSO – Maritime Launch Services (MLS) held an open house at the Canso Firehall on Thursday, March 14 to update residents on its Canso Spaceport project and answer questions. MLS CEO Steve Matier provided information on Spaceport progress, along with several partners who were available to discuss specific aspects of the project.
The event drew over 100 attendees and provided opportunities for community members to engage in discussions around the project.
Speaking with The Journal, Matier discussed possible outcomes of the Focus Report MLS submitted to the Dept. of Environment on March 11.
“The environment minister could make it harder," he said, noting that the province could respond by requesting more information – thus delaying the project further.
If the Focus Report -- requested by the province in 2018 following submission of MLS's original environmental application -- is approved, MLS is looking to a ceremonial groundbreaking this summer, followed by preliminary construction in the fall.
Before attending the open house, Matier was at the Gerald Schwartz School of Business at StFX to speak to students, community members, staff and faculty about the spaceport and what it means for the Canadian space industry. Matier also participated in a Q&A session.
With the Department of Environment’s public notice this week that it has received the Focus Report, a 30-day period for public comments has commenced. The department then has 25 days to review comments and make a recommendation to the minister.
