GUYSBOROUGH – The four-way race for the District 4 seat on MODG council was definitively decided on Saturday, April 13; the final voting day for the municipal by-election for the seat left vacant by the accidental death of Councillor Blair George in January. Dave Hanhams, owner / operator of the Hanhams Gas & Convenience in Half Island Cove, won a majority of the votes cast; almost more than all other candidates combined.
The unofficial returns were as follows: Dave Hanhams 167, Elaine Durling 78, Tino Winter 53 and Jenny MacDonald 42.
On Monday Hanhams said he was very pleased with the results and wanted to thank the other candidates for a well-run campaign. He added, “I'd like to assure the people that I've got their best interest at heart and that I'll do my best and hope to hear from them on a continual basis.”
Hanhams will be sworn in to council on May 1 prior to a Committee of the Whole meeting scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Speaking to his duties on council, Hanhams said he is particularly interested to sit on the board dealing with the proposed Black Point Quarry which is in his district.
